Course Overview
The Aviation and Defense Safety course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals focusing on the domain of safety principles and practices, understanding and managing risk in the civil and defense aviation sectors, and the legal aspects of aviation safety. The course aligns with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations (14 CFR Parts 21, 25, 27, 135) and the safety and defense aviation standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annexes, the Department of Defense (DoD) safety regulations, providing the fundamentals for aviation safety, airworthy aircraft, and safety of personnel during aviation operations. The course provides students with the principles and techniques of hazard and risk management, the development and implementation of proactive safety management systems (SMS) in accordance with ICAO Safety Management System standards, ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety, and the Defense Safety Oversight regulations. It also emphasizes the importance of aviation safety human factors: incident, accident, and operational risk management; crew rest regulations; and safety culture. The program evaluates defense and aviation accident case studies, focusing on risk management, root cause reporting, and lessons learned to guide enhanced risk management. It also studies OSHA 29 CFR 1910 standards for emergency preparedness, ground operations, aircraft maintenance safety, and defense facility security to aviation safety and emergency defense operations. Participants gain the skills needed to create, execute, and evaluate all-encompassing safety programs in aviation and defense, cultivate a culture of ongoing safety enhancement, and certify that people, assets, and missions function with the least risk possible while fulfilling regulatory and operational safety standards and requirements.
